Role-playing the Real: Designing for Trans and Nonbinary Experiences and Explorations in Larps

Larp provides a chance to explore and embody different identities and ways of being. For trans people, like me, this can give us a chance to experience a sense of self that could be difficult in other social environments that might not be so welcoming to gender exploration. In this way, role-play might help us to explore and express our authentic self in-game and outside it too. Based on my PhD work, this talk explores why that might be the case, what transformative opportunity role-play and larp could provide, and how a larp might be designed to create a purposeful space for people to explore gender and their authentic self.
